Agudi Monument

Agudi Monument

The Agudi monument is located in Agudi village of the Qarakilsa district (later Sisian region), 5 km from the city of Sisian, alongside the Agudi-Sisian road.

The Agudi tombstone monument was constructed in the 7th century. With a history spanning nearly 1,400 years, this monumental gravestone has survived to the present day. The Agudi monument has a three-step (or three-tiered) structure. The first tier resembles a wide platform. Under this platform, a small cave-like structure with two arched entrances attracts attention. Around this platform, signs of collapsed and destroyed grave sites enclosed by small fences were preserved until recently. The second tier consists of two rectangular-shaped columns at the sides and an octagonal-shaped column in the center. Both side columns are connected to the central column by arches. The third tier consists of three columns of beautiful architectural design. Agudi village was one of the oldest Azerbaijani villages of the Sisian region. By the decision of the Armenian Parliament dated 03.04.1991, the village of Agudi was renamed "Aghitu."

Currently, Armenians attempt to present this monument as an ancient Armenian monument.
