Urud Grave Monuments
The Urud gravestones, dating back more than 500 years, are located opposite Urud village in Qarakilsa district (later Sisian region), near Urud Fortress on the left bank of the Bazarchay River. Approximately 100 gravestones belonging to Muslim Turkic peoples remain in the cemetery. During the Soviet period, Azerbaijani scholars such as Alasgar Alakbarov, Ziya Bunyadov, and Mashadikhanim Nematova conducted research there. The gravestone inscriptions are executed in various Arabic scripts, including Kufic, Naskh, Thuluth, and Nastaliq. Images and inscriptions depicting pre-Islamic Turkic culture, daily life, hunting scenes, festivities, funeral rites, and Shamanic rituals provide invaluable historical data about the indigenous inhabitants of the region.
After Western Zangezur was incorporated into Soviet Armenia, Armenians stole some of the Urud gravestones. Most of the ram-shaped sculptures in the Sisian district were destroyed, and some have been exhibited as "Armenian cultural monuments" since 1993 in the courtyard of the Sisian Historical Museum. Two of the ram sculptures brought from the Urud cemetery are currently displayed in front of the Nakhchivan Drama Theatre, and two others in front of the Nizami Museum in Ganja, bearing witness to the historical reality of Zangezur's past.
