Bughakar Shrine

Bughakar Shrine

The Bughakar Shrine is a sacred site located near Bughakar village in Meghri district. It was constructed in the Azerbaijani architectural style. The village of Bughakar was named after the commander Buga Al-Kabir, who lived in the 9th century, and consequently, the shrine became known by the village’s name as the "Bughakar Shrine." Among local people, it was also known as the mausoleum of Sultan Seyid Ahmad. Bughakar village, historically inhabited by Azerbaijanis, was abolished in 1939, and its residents were relocated to Lehvaz village. However, the Bughakar Shrine remained a pilgrimage site for Azerbaijanis living in the surrounding villages.
After the forced expulsion of Azerbaijanis from Western Zangezur in 1988, this monument was destroyed by Armenians.
