Western Azerbaijan

Caravanserais

In the medieval period, caravanserais were located mainly in cities and along caravan routes. One branch of the Silk Road connecting East and West passed through Western Azerbaijan. The main Silk Road route extended from Tabriz through Nakhchivan, Divin (Dabil), Talin, Ani, Kars, and Erzurum, ultimately reaching the Black Sea. Other caravan routes passed through Tiflis and Zangazur. Caravanserais played a significant role in the development of international trade.

Besides serving as rest stops for caravans, caravanserais also provided infrastructure facilitating trade, information exchange, and the movement of people along trade routes. Merchants used caravanserais both as inns and storage facilities for their goods. Some caravanserais included stables for accommodating pack animals.

Numerous caravanserais existed within the territory of Western Azerbaijan. Historical sources provide information about various caravanserais, including those in the city of Iravan and regional examples such as Selim, Chirpili, Siniq, and others.
