Ashiq Alasgar's Grave Monument

Ashiq Alasgar's Grave Monument

Ashiq Alasgar, a prominent representative of Azerbaijani Ashiq art, was born in 1821 in the village of Agkilsa in the Goycha region.

In 1919, as a result of Armenian massacres in the Goycha region, Ashiq Alasgar, along with his family, moved first to Yanshaq village in Kalbajar and then to Tartar. Two years later, the Ashiq returned to his native village and lived there until the end of his life, passing away on March 7, 1926.

The celebration of Ashiq Alasgar’s 150th anniversary in Baku and Moscow in 1972 was a significant recognition of the Goycha Ashiq tradition. In the same year, an impressive monument was erected over the grave of the distinguished Ashiq in Agkilsa village of Basarkechar district.

After the mass deportation of Azerbaijanis from the Armenian SSR in 1988, the grave monument of Ashiq Alasgar was destroyed by Armenian vandals.

On September 30, 2024, during the unveiling of a monument dedicated to Ashiq Alasgar in Baku, President Ilham Aliyev of the Republic of Azerbaijan stated: "The day will come when we will restore the statue of Ashiq Alasgar destroyed by Armenians and hold a similar ceremony in Agkilsa village."

By the decision of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated January 3, 1935, the name of the village was changed to "Azat."
