Chirpili Caravanserai

Chirpili Caravanserai

Chirpili Caravanserai is located in the territory of Chirpili village within the Aghin district of the Shorayel region. The village of Chirpili was submerged in 1970 due to the construction of the Arpachay reservoir along the Armenia-Türkiye border. Historically, major medieval international trade routes ran through Chirpili. Today, only part of the ruined caravanserai remains.

Constructed between 1326 and 1332, Chirpili Caravanserai was built from red tuff stone bonded with lime mortar. Its floor was paved with stone slabs. The remaining section features a three-nave hall measuring 31 meters long and 13.65 meters wide. Two rows of eight columns run along the hall’s length, dividing the space into three sections connected by arches.

By decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR dated August 28, 1974, the village was renamed "Jrapi."

According to the law "On the administrative-territorial division of the Republic of Armenia," dated November 7, 1995, Chirpili was incorporated into the administrative territory of Shirak Province.
