Isa Ibrahimov

Isa Husu oghlu Ibrahimov was born on January 6, 1925, in the village of Shaharjik, Gafan region, Zangezur province of Western Azerbaijan, and graduated from high school there.

When the Great Patriotic War broke out in 1941, he voluntarily went to the front, although he was not yet 18 years old. Immediately after the war, I. Ibrahimov worked as a teacher in Garadigha and Ajili villages of Gafan region, and from 1948 onwards, he served as a teacher in the international high school number one in Gafan city. In parallel with working as a teacher, I. Ibrahimov entered the Faculty of Philology of the Pedagogical Institute in Iravan in 1946 and graduated from there with honours.

I. Ibrahimov succeeded in acquiring an excellent reputation among the intellectuals of the Gafan region, including educational collectives, for a short period due to his high intelligence, unconventional thinking style, and logical arguments. In 1950, as a result of his successful steps in the field of public education, I. Ibrahimov was appointed to the position of inspector in the district education department. Shortly thereafter, he was entrusted with great responsibility and was elected chairman of this organization at the conference of the trade union of educational workers. The election of Isa Ibrahimov for this position, especially in a city like Gafan where a large number of Armenians reside, should be regarded as recognition of his great abilities by the Armenians.

Despite the significant number of Azerbaijani residents in Gafan, there was no newspaper published in the Azerbaijani language. As a result of his strenuous efforts during that period, a regional newspaper called “Mis uğrunda mübarizə” (Struggle for Copper) began to be published in the Azerbaijani language, and Isa Ibrahimov served as its editor-in-chief until 1960.

More than a thousand Azerbaijani children of school age lived in the city of Gafan, and taking into account this factor, an Azerbaijani high school was opened for the first time in 1960. Isa Ibrahimov was appointed the director of the school No.4 and worked in this position until his retirement. Integrity and selfless work were symbols of Isa Ibrahimov's life. He would help everyone in need, even defending the Azerbaijanis from Gubadli and Zangilan who faced human rights violations in Gafan.

Isa Ibrahimov was very far-sighted and always predicted that Armenians would commit provocations. He never trusted Armenians or their doctors. Due to his health condition, I. Ibrahimov couldn't come to Baku for his next course of treatment, and he passed away in the hospital where he was receiving treatment in Gafan on October 29, 1987, as a result of an injection administered on the orders of an Armenian doctor.

In 1988, three Armenians from Gafan were taken prisoner in Zangilan, and among them was an Armenian dashnak named Hamlet. He confessed that the plan to assassinate Isa Ibrahimov by administering an injection to him at the hospital was organized deliberately. The enemy acknowledged that since there was no leader to guide and guard the Azerbaijanis in Gafan after this murder, they were easily exiled.

Isa Ibrahimov, the unforgettable son of the Zangezur region, continues to live on in the hearts and minds of those who knew him.
