Zal Khan Mosque

Zal Khan Mosque

One of the mosques located in Iravan's Old City, between the Fortress (Gala) and Tapabashi districts, was known as Zal Khan Mosque or City Mosque. Constructed in 1649 during the reign of Zal Khan, it was destroyed by the 1679 earthquake and rebuilt in 1687. Zal Khan Mosque closely resembled the Blue Mosque, featuring a restful courtyard and shaded garden. Researchers indicate it was located near today's Republic Square in Iravan. In 1928, the mosque's great hall was demolished, and the Hotel Iravan (currently the Golden Tulip Hotel Iravan) was built in its place.

After World War II, the Zal Khan Mosque's madrasa was repurposed as an exhibition hall for the Artists' House. A 1949 archival document preserved in the State Archive of the Republic of Azerbaijan confirms its use as an exhibition hall.
